One of four examples made for the Japanese Palace of Augustus II the Strong, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony (b.1670, d.1733) between 1732 and 1735; acquired by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild (b.1839, d,1898) or Miss Alice de Rothschild (b.1847, d.1922); by descent to their great-nephew Mr James de Rothschild (b.1878, d.1957); bequeathed to Waddesdon The Rothschild Collection (The National Trust) in 1957.
