Brief Description

Wrapper and possible receipt for playing cards manufactured by Charles Poisson of Caen, master playing card manufacturer (maître cartier). The design on the wrapper consists of a rectangular double-ruled shape, with a trapezoidal flap at top and bottom, intended to wrap around the short sides of the cards. On the top flap the initials ‘CP’ appear inverted in respect to the orientation of the rest of the design. The double rule, which divides this from the central reserve, is pierced by the top of a crown decorated with fleur-de-lis. This rests on an oval cartouche emblazoned with the motto.

In the centre of this cartouche there are two keys crossed and bound with a ribbon, each with a cross on its teeth. Above this is a letter ‘L’ crowned with a smaller crown decorated with fleur-de-lis. Below the keys is a larger fleur-de-lis. A triple-rule divides this part of the reserve from that containing the text of the wrapper. Below the text, the lower trapezoidal flap shows a shield with three black fleur-de-lis. Image and text both woodcut.

Curatorial Commentary

In his notes on the Waddesdon trade card volumes, Geoffrey de Bellaigue categorized this item under "Invoices and Receipts", referring to the manuscript annotation.
