Brief Description

Trade card for Famain, master inlay-worker (maître tabletier), At the Strong King, engraved by G. Ladame (Gabriel). The image and text are engraved. The design consists of a representation of the shop sign, a depiction of goods and a text area.

The engraved image takes up the upper two-thirds of the card and features a reserve in the form of an irregular octagon surrounded by a triple rule. On the outside of this shape, there are various products of the inlay-worker's trade. In the upper left-hand corner, an unguent bottle or sprinkler and a bobbin; in the upper right-hand corner, a spoon, a fork and a crucifix; in the lower left corner, a pomander ball and a chess board; in the lower right corner, a spherical box and a backgammon board.

The octagon contains a full-length image of a Bourbon monarch standing in contraposto, presumably Louis XIV, holding a cane in his right hand and wearing an ermine-lined cloak which he raises with his left hand to reveal his sword and armoured leg — the 'Roy Fort' of the shop sign. He is standing on a low, pentagonal fortress in the style of Vauban, with a cannon on each of its four visible bastions — a 'roi' on a 'fort'. A counterscarp surrounds the fortress, which appears to be on a broad river or coast. In the distance, to the right of the king, a mountain is visible. A wooded hill appears to the left. The engraved text appears below the image.
