Brief Description

Trade card for a surgical instrument maker, At the Crowned Pomegranate. The image and text are engraved. The design consists of a representation of the shop sign, and a depiction of goods.

The crowned pomegranate of the shop sign appears at the upper centre of the image; it is framed by a band bearing the name of the sign. Below the sign is a shelf draped with a plain ribbon that becomes a striped forked ribbon at either end.

A selection of tools appears in the centre. Clockwise from upper right: a lancet (small triangle), a vaginal speculum (large object with trefoil end), cataract or general surgical scissors (curved scissors); trepanning brace and bit (drill handle); lenticular knife (at lower right); surgical scissors; tripod trepanner (large object in centre); dental forceps (plier-like object lower centre); lancet; dental chisel; setaceum or seton screw (three spokes with fleuron decoration); amputation knife (S-shaped knife); ophthalmic scalpel or tracheotomy knife (to left of S-shaped knife); amputation saw; possibly an oral speculum (large object with S-shaped decoration); and a lancet.

The tools are framed by two palm fronds sprouting from twisted bands terminating in fluid composite capitals. The frame is flanked by two male winged putti who turn away from the centre. The putti on the right holds two amputation knives; the one on the left holds a poniard or an awl and a pair of forceps.

At the lower centre is a bestial mask, framed by scrolling acanthus leaves. This lower section has been trimmed.

Curatorial Commentary

Identification of the tools made by Jane Rees, Tools & Trades History Society.

The arrangement of the card is similar to that of Michel, cutler (coutelier - marchand et maître), Paris, rue du Petit Lion Saint-Sauveur, A L'Enseigne Du Couteau; size of image and text: 160 x 121. The image includes instruments arranged within a frame. The text lists the goods: coutellerie chinoise, razoirs, instruments de chiurgie. See Victoria and Albert Museum, Prints and Drawings Department, 28803.A.

Some cutlers' trade cards are reproduced by Camille Pagé, see Related Documents, I have been unable to check this source.
