Brief Description

Trade card of Louis Picard, spice merchant (marchand épicier), At the Golden Mortar, designed, etched and engraved by Landry (Pierre). The image is etched and finished with engraving; the text is engraved. The whole card takes the form of a shop counter that is superimposed with fantastical elements related to the presentation of goods and the shop address.

The counter top is approximately a third down the card. At the back of the counter are drawers labelled with pigments. On the counter is an elaborate golden mortar decorated with a geometrical circular pattern around the rim, from which is suspended a scalloped fringe with tassels. The handles are formed by leaf scrolls. The mortar's base is decorated with acanthus leaves and gadrooning. A pestle rests in the mortar. The mortar stands on a simple double level square stone plinth which bears the shop sign. Easels and paint brushes rest against the mortar. Bladders of prepared paint are also piled on the right. To the left of the mortar, at the back of the counter, is a box labelled, and filled with, pastels.

Above the mortar is a festoon composed of ribbons, husk motif, bladders of prepared paint, paint brushes and palettes; the festoon takes on the appearance of trophies on either side as the bunches of brushes and palettes form cross shapes.

A fringed lambrequin is nailed centrally to the front of the counter; the upper corners are tied with ribbons. This lambrequin bears the rest of the inscription.
