Brief Description

Trade card for Poincelier, paper merchant (marchand), At the Incomparable and At the Virtue of the Anchor, made by I. P. The text and image are both engraved. The design consists of a representation of the shop sign, goods and a text area.

The card is in two zones, the divide occuring approximately at its centre. The lower zone contains the text in letterpress, surrounded by ornament fleurons. The upper zone, surrounded by a double rule, contains a representation of Louis XIV (Le Sans Pareil) in Roman armour, bestriding the globe. He holds a baton in his right hand; his left rests on an anchor. The sky above is indicated by a field of broken parallel lines.

Louis is surrounded by an assortment of stationers' goods. On the left side of the card is a candle holder; a decorated portfolio; an inkpot with two spouts, containing a cut and an uncut quill; a carton; and a bundle of leads, crayons or wax tapers. To the right, is an inkwell with four holes and a single, smaller quill; a penknife; a wax seal; a plain, envelope-fastening portfolio; and another carton.

Curatorial Commentary

The virtue with which the anchor is traditionally associated is hope, but it may also form a type of pun or rebus of Poincelier's name: the function of an anchor is to stick into the sea-bottom by virtue of its points (poincons=Poincelier) [HUMOUR]

The shop-sign is possibly based on an illustration of the sculptors Guibal and Chifflet’s statue of Louis XV formerly in the Place Stanislas (Louis XV) at Nancy, for Patte’s "Monuments érigés en France à la gloire de Louis XV" of 1765 (see acc. no. 1854).
