Brief Description

Trade card of Bouton, merchant stationer in-ordinary (marchand papetier ordinaire) to the Chambre du Roi, At the Arms of France and Navarre. The image is etched and the text engraved. A frame composed of Vitruvian scrolls runs around the four edges of the card. The text of the card takes up the lower three-quarters of the card. Beneath the text is a row of large and small flowers joined by straggly stems and leaves.

Above the text appears the device of the shop sign. Two adult fully-clothed angels stand on a floating ground area, to either side of the framed heraldic motif. They wear a surcoat or tabard bearing the arms of France, and hold banners also bearing the French arms. The heraldic motif is composed of two shields placed side by side: on the left, showing the arms of France, on the right, showing the arms of Navarre. These two shields were used to create the arms of Henry IV, King of Navarre (1562) and King of France (1589). A helmet seen face-on and surmounted by a crown surmounts the shields. The frame around these two shields is composed of a simple scroll. A chain flanks the frame on either side, and meets at a blank Maltese cross suspended from the lower centre of the frame.

Curatorial Commentary

Grand-Carteret reproduces another card for Bouton with an architectural cartouche of scrollwork surrounding the text set on a plinth ontop of which is the shop sign supported by two winged females, surrounded by goods, dated to c. 1690. This featured in the catalogue of prints of Godefrey Mayer priced at 45 francs, no. 45. Bouton was taken over by his son-in-law Latizeau c. 1770.
