Brief Description

Trade card of the widow Mitoire, merchant stationer (marchande papetière) and playing card manufacturer (fabriquante de cartes à jouer) with privileges from the King, At the Order of the Holy Spirit, etched and engraved by Niodot. The image is etched. The engraved text of the card, which occupies its lower half, is surrounded by a reserve defined by interlaced leaf scrolls and sprays of foliage and flowers. The capitals of Widow Mitoire's name are decorated with parallel lines.

In the upper half of the card, above this cartouche, appears an oval medallion with the image of the dove of the Holy Spirit. The medallion's frame is composed of several elements: firstly, the chain of the Order of the Holy Spirit with a Maltese cross decorated with a dove hanging below; secondly, a solid frame edged with S-shaped leaf scrolls; thirdly, a pattern composed of flowers, flags, and fleurs-de-lis appears against the frame between the chain and the frame edge; fourthly, a stylised husk motif wreath. A crown decorated with fleurs-de-lis surmounts the frame.

Two clothed adolescent angels, female on the left, male on the right, support the frame. They fly amid clouds and the rays of light of a glory. Above the crown a ribbon flutters across the top of the composition, bearing the shop sign. The ribbon forms a fleur-de-lis at upper centre, just above the similarly shaped finial of the crown.

Curatorial Commentary
