Brief Description

Trade card and possible invoice of Parfait, merchant jeweller (marchand bijoutier) and seller of luxury goods, At the Protector of the Arts. The image is etched and the text engraved. The desing consists of a representation of the shop sign, and an architectural surround for the text.

The card depicts a semicircular arch in the Corinthian order with two projecting wings. The entablature of the arch consists of a cyma recta, above a beaded course, above a plain fascia supported by modillions. Below this is a course of dentils supported by two courses of cyma reversa with a waterleaf-and-dart motif above a bead-and-reel astragal. Below this, the frieze carries the shopkeeper's name and trade. Below this is another course of cyma reversa with waterleaf-and-dart above three undecorated fascia. This architrave is supported by two compound piers of fluted columns. These rest on two rectangular piers. The arch is decorated with a rusticated keystone and imposts on either side.

Two wings project from the piers. The bases of the columns and the wings are decorated with marble panels. Between the rectangular piers at lower centre, are two winged putti bearing symbols of Faith, Hope, Commerce, and the Arts. They crown a medallion of the young Louis XV. An unfurling ribbon beneath the medallion bears the shop sign. The void formed in the centre of the arch and above the glory furnishes the main space for the text. Oval garlanded plaques suspended by bows on the wings, provide two more reserves.

Curatorial Commentary

In his notes on the Waddesdon trade card volumes, Geoffrey de Bellaigue noted that this item may be an invoice.
