Brief Description

Trade card of Pierre-François Basan, paper merchant (marchand), At Justice. The image is etched and the text engraved; the capitals in the first line of text are executed in a decorative style. The design consists of a representation of the shop sign and a depiction of goods arranged in a landscape setting. The whole is surrounded by a double rule. The upper edge and the sides are also surrounded by a shaded border of parallel lines.

The representation of the shop sign takes up the upper half of the card. It consists of a framed oval with a depiction of Justice represented as a seated woman in a voluminous classical dress holding a pair of scales in her left hand and an upright sword in her right. The frame of the oval is composed of a plain moulding in the shape of a C-scroll that meets either side of a rocaille form surmounted by a ribbon tied in a bow. Flanking the frame are flower festoons and two cornucopias from which spill flowers and leaves. Three winged naked putti, one with a quiver, frolic around the frame holding up flower festoons. The whole rests on floating clouds which appear to spill out of the picture of Justice. The text appears between this motif and the representation of goods at the bottom of the card.

The goods appear in a jumbled assortment resting on a ledge amongst flowers and foliage. On the right, there is an urn decorated with fluting and snakes resting on a low wall, and a tree behind. To the left, the masts of a large sailing ship, one aslant, are visible. The goods are as described in the text. From left to right, they include a portfolio, cardboard boxes, pots of ink, crayons, quills and pens, a screen decorated with a mascaron, several fans, a small locking portfolio, and registers. In the lower centre, there is a shell bearing the words 'A Paris'.

Curatorial Commentary

The image was copied in reverse for another stationer called Barabo, see 3686.1.83.168. For a card with a similar style, see 3686.1.91.185.

Grand-Carteret illustrates a different trade card for Pierre-François Basan, A La Justice, with a rococo shield-shaped cartouche surrounding the text, a representation of the shop sign, Justice sitting on clouds at lower right, and a pile of goods at lower left. Grand-Carteret points out that this was not the same man who sold prints from his house on the rue de la Serpente (see 3686.3.31.76 and 3686.3.67.144), see Related documents.
