Brief Description

Trade card of Vaugeois, merchant of games, snuff boxes, etc (marchand), At the Green Monkey. The image is etched and finished with engraving, the text is engraved; the capitals in the second line of text are decorated with parallel lines. The design consists of a plaque bearing the text, a representation of the shop sign and a depiction of goods. The whole is framed by a double rule.

The plaque is set on an architectural block that takes up the lower three-fifths of the card. The block is shaded with parallel lines. The plaque projects from the surface of the block. On top of the block appear the representation of the shop sign and goods set below a further architectural beam.

Propped up against the top of the block and the beam, there is a large framed roundel surrounded by a laurel festoon and surmounted by a ribbon tied in a bow. The ends of the ribbon stretch across the beam bearing the name of the shop sign. Inside the roundel, there is a picture of a stripy monkey holding a dice cup in front of a backgammon board on which there is a dice.

Goods appear to the left and right of the roundel, some supported on ribbons hanging from eyelets affixed to the beam at upper left and right. These eyelets hang from acanthus mounts. The ribbons hang through the eyelets and are draped across to the roundel where they are affixed with decorative loops.

The goods are mostly mentioned in the text. Hanging from the left-hand ribbon, there is a seal and a small brush. Beneath the ribbon, there is an oval candle sconce and a pedestal table, proabably a washstand, decorated with acanthus leaves, chevrons, egg and dart pattern and scroll feet. A comb lies on the tabletop. A crucifix and oval snuffbox appears to the left. Tied to the draped ribbon on the left, there are three walking sticks with different shaped pommels. Below there is a small screen decorated with scrolls; a roll of paper; a small spinning wheel; gaming blocks, one with a handle perhaps for pushing counters; and a small horseshoe-shaped board for a ball game.

Hanging from the right-hand ribbon, there is a pencil holder, a diary, a seal, a fan, a pen and a scraper. Tied to the draped ribbon on the right, there are two fashioned sticks, probably walking sticks for the country, and a bow. Beneath there is a fan; a round snuffbox; a small portfolio; a board for draughts or chess; a dice cup and dice; round balls or counters; and an ink well standing on a sponge and a plate.

Curatorial Commentary

For a print from the same premises see 3686.3.35.88.

Vaugeois was a very well-known merchant at the end of the 18th century. He was mentioned by Oberkirch in her memoirs, and was recommended in several gaming manuals and dictionaries in the 1770s. He supplised the Royal family with several games. His label is found on many gaming boxes. He diversified into jewellery and women's leisure equipment. New rules concerning tabletiers allowed him to sell wares traditionally sold by members of other guilds. François or Adam Vaugeois died in 1793. His son Bernard François took over. In 1792 he provided several games for the Royal family when they were imprisonned in the tower. (See Depaulis, 2009).

Adrian Seville sent two photographs of the Vaugeois etiquettes in mother-of-pearl from his own games table - see object file (13/05/2015)
