Brief Description

Trade card of Bligny, painter and decorator (peintre, doreur), and King's lancer (lancier du roi). The image is etched and the text engraved. The design consists of an area for text set on an architectural support and an allegorical representation of Bligny's goods and services.

The architectural support takes the form of a rectangular wall monument. A large plain plaque bears the majority of the text in the middle of the monument. The plaque is bordered by a shaded frame. Beneath this, there is a smaller shaded plaque bearing the text 'Tient Magazin de Paier... autres'. The text is flanked by two small laurel leaf festoons handing from studs. This plaque has a plain surround with projecting corners. Three triangular dentils depend from each of the lower corners.

To the sides of the plaques are two pilasters. Their square bases are mounted with large rosette bosses. The pilasters support a plain entablature, with a plain panelled frieze and a cavetto cornice. Two palmette mounts, at upper left and right of the frieze, support rings through which is threaded a laurel leaf festoon in the form of a bay leaf garland. Hanging on the ribbons that depend from these garlands are two trophies, which rest against the pilasters.

On the left-hand trophy, from the top, there is a sculpted female head; two figural drawings; a mallet and a bundle of chisels; a set square, pair of compasses and rulers amongst architectural plans; a lyre; two hoes tied with ribbons; sheets of music; two watering cans; a spade; a rake; and a basket of flowers. On the right-hand trophy, from the top, there is an easel and portfolio; a drawing of a woman's head; a palette with mahl-stick and brushes; an open book of music and a lute; a plumed helmet flanked by flags and muskets; and a leather pouch.

Hovering over the cornice of the monument, there is a cloud bank from which emanates a glory. Two winged and partially clad putti appear in the centre of the clouds. One sits and holds the bay leaf garland. The other stands and holds a trumpet in his right hand, and a flower wreath over the head of his companion. They appear to be angels.
