Commentary

Brief Description

Trade card of La Chapelle, merchant stationer (marchand papetier) and playing card manufacturer (fabriquant de cartes à jouer) privileged by the court and King, At the Order of the Holy Spirit. The image is etched and the text is engraved; the capitals of La Chapelle's name are decorated with parallel lines. Printed on grey paper. The design consists of a cartouche surrounding the text and a representation of the shop sign.

The text occupies the lower-half of the card. It is surrounded by a cartouche of C-scroll and S-scroll acanthus leaves and a festoon of foliage and flowers.

In the upper-half of the card, there appears an oval medallion with the image of the dove of the Holy Spirit. The medallion's frame is composed of the chain of the Order of the Holy Spirit with a Maltese cross decorated with a dove, and a cartouche edged with S-shaped leaf scrolls. A crown decorated with fleurs-de-lis surmounts the cartouche. A laurel festoon hangs down each side of the cartouche.

Two clothed adolescent angels support the cartouche. The angel on the right appears to be female, that on the left male. They sit on a cloud bank. A glory shines out from above the crown; in this area there is also a ribbon that flutters across the top of the composition, bearing the name of the shop sign.

Curatorial Commentary

For a slightly different version of this card, see 3686.2.67.175 and for the Widow Mitoire's card see 3686.1.85.172.

According to Grand-Carteret, La Chapelle suceeded Widow Mitoire in 1780. He was active until 1794 when the shop became La Chapelle et Auzou. Grand-Carteret illustrates a different version of the address, which cost 20 Francs in 1912, sold by the bookseller Ernest Dumont (Cat. 176).
