Brief Description

Trade card of Castoldy the elder, music and geographical printseller (marchand d’estampes de musique et carte de géographie) and merchant optician (marchand opticien), At the Palace of the Estates in Dijon. The design consists of an architectural block bearing the text and a representation of goods.

The oblong block is mounted with a plain plaque bearing the text. The plaque is edged with beading and a flat moulding shaded with parallel lines. The upper corners are concave. Beyond the plaque, the sides of the block have a recession decorated with a guilloche and fleuron pattern. The base of the block projects in the centre. The front of the base is decorated with a frieze of scrolling acanthus leaves. Surmounting the block, resting against the lower part of the plaque, there is a rocaille form flanked by S-scroll acanthus leaves. A festoon of flowers depends from the ends of the S-scrolls.

The top of the block is surmounted by a low curved and fluted block. The sides of the block are mounted with C-scrolls. A garland of flowers depends from the C-scrolls, and winds around the sides of the block as if they were part of a frame, contradicting the representation of the solid plaque.

Mounted in front of the upper block at upper centre, there is an oval cartouche surrounding the name of the shop sign. The cartouche is composed of two C-scroll acanthus leaves arranged around a foliate and rocaille form. A small floral festoon hangs from the cartouche. Two naked wingless putti recline against the cartouche. They hold goods, on the left a mirror; on the right, a small telescope. Further goods appear at their feet. On the left, a thermometer, and two telescopes; on the right, a swivelling lens in a round frame and a pair of pince-nez.
