Commentary

Volume One of Desaint and Saillant's edition of Jean de La Fontaine's (1621-1695) "Fables choisies" was published in 1755. It contains the first three books from the original edition, first published between 1668 and 1694. The plates for this volume were designed by Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755) between 1729 and 1734 and engraved by thirty artists under the direction of Charles-Nicolas Cochin the Younger (1715-1790). The binding is decorated with specially-cut tools illustrating the fables (see 3681.1-4).

Volume One of the Waddesdon set begins with a frontispiece by Oudry, designed in 1752, depicting La Fontaine; Aesop - one of the classical sources for the fables; and some of the animals that feature repeatedly in the tales. La Fontaine is shown as a sculpted bust, signifying his celebrated status but perhaps also his death fifty-years before. The semi-mythical classical writer Aesop, on the other hand, is shown alive, transported into the future and paying homage to the man who has resurrected his works. Aesop's liveliness also reflects the fact that he features in the tales, alongside the wolf, lion and monkeys who surround him in the image. The motif of Aesop pointing at La Fontaine in the frontispiece is replicated on the binding. An explanation of the frontispiece is given at the end of Volume Four (p. 185).

Each story in Volume One is illustrated by a print, with the names of the designer and engravers carefully recorded underneath. Four fables have two illustrations. The story of the miller, his son and the ass (Text: Book III, Fable I / Illustration: Fable XLIII) has five plates, all dedicated to François de Maucroix, a friend of La Fontaine. At Waddesdon, the cover designs on a set of chairs made by Nicolas-Quinibert Foliot (1706-1776) (acc. nos 3253.1-6), are based on the "Fables" illustrations, including that of the wolf and the stork from Volume One (Text: Book III, Fable 9 / Illustration: Fable LI). Oudry's designs are reminiscent of tapestries, making them particularly suited to textile decoration. He also included a tapestry in the illustration for the first fable, creating a witty commentary on the artifice and artistry of both fables and illustrations (Text: Book I, Fable I / Illustration: Fable I).

The following is a description of the illustrations to the fables in Volume One (not including wood-engraved head-pieces and tail-pieces - 51 in Vol. 1 - designed by Jean-Jacques Bachelier and engraved by Jean-Michel Papillon). All plates are etched and engraved, except the title-page which is a wood engraving. Below are listed the location of the illustration (as it appears in the Waddesdon volume); the title and fable number as it appears on the plate; an English translation of the title; the makers' details as they appear on the plate; and sizes of the plate marks, image and text areas and image areas - the latter measured to the edge of the border, inclusive of the title area. The fables are divided into the three books, as they are in the volume. It is important to note that in all examples of this publication, the numbering of the fables differs in the text and illustrations.
